NAIL Sapa Dawn 1997 Board Member Report

Board member report by: Binah McCloud

Last year was a busy year, part of which was spent working with Robby Romero of Red Thunder, booking concerts in Indian country. In March, we did two concerts for Muckleshoot Indian community and the Spring at Sapa Dawn Center. I was also able to travel to Phoenix Arizona to participate in a planning meeting for Healing The Future" which was confirmed this Elder guided program would come to Washington at the end of 1997 or sometimes in 1998.

In May we had a Red Thunder concert for Oregon Native Youth Council in Silitz, Oregon for the graduating students in the community. Traveled to the Annual Elder/Youth Conference in Fresno, California. Returned home to do two concerts at University of Washington and Chief Leschi School, thus ending the Native Children Survival Tour for the Northwest.

Traveled to Red Shirt Table in Pine Ridge South Dakota for the Sundance, also attended the Indigenous Environmental Network conference in Fort Belknap, Montana.

September, Bonnie Deere and myself traveled to Montana to observe the Crow "Healing the Future". This ended up being a planning meeting. Which in turn initiated us to attend Gila River, Arizona gathering in November. Me, Bonnie Deere, Jimbo Simmons and Barbara McCloud attended as the planning committee for Washington State. Gila River was very successful with this family program, this had a more definite understanding of what the program is about. We returned home full of ideas, plans and how we would do the Washington program.

"Healing The Future" will be hosted by Sapa Dawn Center and Chief Leschi Schools set for May 22-26, 1998. We are looking for a successful program along with a successful year.
